Man & Woman of The Year Gala

16 06 2008

Wow…10 weeks has sure flown by.  On Saturday evening we wrapped up the final day of our campaigns.  Collectively we raised over $760,000!  That’s amazing!  The Woman of The Year is Chartese Burnett.  Chartese works for the Washington Nationals Baseball club.  Her team helped her raise over $70K.  Even more impressive was our 2008 Man of The Year Jim Galvenek who raised a whopping $160K!  In just two weeks Jim will also be participating in the Iron Man competition.  Jim also is a survivor of Leukemia.  Our runner ups were quite impressive as well.  I walked away from the day with the 2008 Community Volunteerism Award.  An honor I share with Dan Cole of Consumer Electonics.  We tied in the voting.  So thank you to everyone that helped my campaign be a success.

The Gala was absolutely amazing.  Alison Starling & Brian Egan did a wonderful job of being the hosts for the evening.  The Andrew W. Mellon Hall was decorated so nicely (I’ll post some pictures soon).  The caterer did a outstanding job (I especially enjoyed the chocolate, hazelnut merigue, raspberry torte…yum!).  The silent auction tables were stocked full of amazing donations.  I won an auction for a Cal Ripkin, Jr. autographed baseball for my husband and a handbag I won for my mother.  Then my husband and I went in with two other couples and won a bid for a night on a yacht.  That should be fun!  As you can see they had lots of great items to bid on.  I can’t wait to find out what each of my donations raised the gala.  And last but not least was the fabulous Ketel One Martini bar made out of ice.  That was seriously a sight to behold.

Everyone looked absolutely marvelous.  It was truly a grand celebration.  Everyone has worked so hard make this a successful campaign.  I’m proud to say I was a part of this amazing group of people who gave so much of their time and energy towards this good cause.  I know the funds we helped raise will go towards making the future for those diagnosed with Leukemia a brighter one!

As soon as I have a chance I’ll upload the pictures I have from the evening.

Thanks again to all my friends, family, and collegues who helped make this campaign such a huge success.  I am very fortunate to have such wonderful people in my life!  Thank you all!!!!

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to Name Local 2008 Man and Woman of the Year

ALEXANDRIA, VA – At a black tie gala to be held on June 14 in the elegant Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in downtown Washington, D.C., The National Capital Area (NCA) chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will announce the names of the 2008 Man and Woman of the Year. The gala marks the finish of a fundraising competition that launched on April 10, involves 16 candidates, their campaign teams and hundreds of Washingtonians who are supporting them. Local winners will go on to compete for the national title, which will be announced later in the summer.

The NCA chapter has been the nation’s top fundraising chapter for the past six years, and local campaign winners have won the national title eight times in the past seven years. Last year, the campaign raised more than $860,000. Although the amount raised is a closely guarded secret until it is announced at the final gala, organizers did say that this year’s field is well on its way to breaking another record.
