32 Pounds of Marijuana Found in Berwyn Heights Mayor’s Home

2008_0731_berwyn.jpg

The home of Berwyn Heights, Md. Mayor Cheye Calvo was raided on Tuesday, reports the Post, and police recovered 32 pounds of marijuana inside. A SWAT team also shot and killed Calvo’s two dogs when they entered the home.

Now, considering we’re the home former Mayor Marion “Bitch Set Me Up” Barry, it’s hard for the District to laugh too hard at this nearby small town. Then again, 32 pounds is a lot of marijuana. That’s way more than could possibly be intended just for personal consumption.

Calvo maintains his innocence, telling the paper he’s “never done drugs in my life.” The package was addressed to his wife, Trinity Tomsic, who works as a finance officer for the state. The raid was organized after a police dog at a shipping facility in Arizona identified the package as containing marijuana.

The scene Calvo described of being surrounded by pools of blood from his dead dogs is pretty horrific. The raid was conducted by the Prince George’s County Sheriff’s Department, and the Chief of the Berwyn Heights Police Department argues at the end of the story that had he been notified of the plan, he could have easily entered Calvo’s home to investigate without killing the two dogs.

Christmas in July!

31 07 2008

So my boss just got a package from the firm.  It was chock full of goodies from his latest Director’s Council trip.  He gave me a few things from the box.  The one I’m super excited about is the Bose QuietComfort 2 Acoustic Noise canceling earphones.  I have seen these and always thought I’d like to own a pair but at $350 a pop I decided it was a luxury I didn’t really need.  Susan got a pair of the Bose in ear headphones.  Wow…it’s a good day at the office!  I think Joe was feeling extra happy since he’s off to Disney tonight.  Say hi to Mickey for us!!!

X-Files Review

30 07 2008

Last night I saw the new X-Files movie.  After all these years it’s comforting to see our beloved characters Dana Scully and Moulder have not aged too much.  They appear a bit older and a bit more worn down by the “darkness” that has permeated their lives for so long.  Even after leaving the FBI they are drawn back into an intriguing investigation involving pedophile priests, same sex marriages, and stem cell therapy.  Even George W. Bush just a brief debut in the movie.  The movie brings into question the fragility of faith and hope.  Yes…this movie really does leave you wanting to believe.  There was a lot woven into this movie.  It was suspenseful enough to keep you interested throughout the movie.  However, I have to echo my friend Vickie’s opinion that this felt more like an extended episode of the series.  You’d think after 10 years that Chris Carter would want to create a movie that was worthy of the series and really went out with a big bang.  Of course x-files purists will be happy just to see Dana & Moulder together again.

Frustrated

29 07 2008

Okay so I spent the last 40 minutes of so typing up my responses to the book club questions on Bread Alone.  Then the darn computer freaks out on me and I’ve lost all my work.  Well…suffice it to say the book is fantastic.  I can’t wait to get my hands on the sequel.  However, my brilliant insights on this book are apparently left best to those members of my book club.  I’m too tired to rethink all my responses.  Sigh.  Oh well…best laid plans and all.

On to my next book.  My friend Abby gave me a copy of The Shack by William P. Young.  I’ve read the first several chapters and it’s very interesting.  When reading do you ever imagine a different voice than your own reading the book to you?   I imagine a grandfather sitting in front of a fire recounting some long ago tail.  I like books like this that instantly transport you.  This is a book from the Christian Fiction section.  I’ll let you know how this one goes…that is if my computer doesn’t cause me grief again!  Okay…so I admit it was likely operator error – LOL!

Mamma Mia!

28 07 2008

I love this song for a multitude of reasons!!!  Oh…but those outfits!

Abby, Liz (and her two girls), Vickie and I all checked out the movie Mamma Mia this weekend.  The theater was packed with ladies (just a sprinkling of men in the audience).  We arrived 15 minutes before the movie and the only seats left were in the second row!  Meryl Streep was fantastic in this movie!  I loved the location of the shoot.  After watching this all I can think about is escaping to some remote Greek Island.  With all the ABBA music you just can’t help but want to sing along.  I had to fight the urge to want to get up and dance.  Had we been watching this on Abby’s theater system I assure you all of us would have been up and dancing like fools.  You just can’t help but have fun watching this musical.  It’s really a lot of fun.  Definately leave the husbands at home.  This is a great chick flick!!!!  After the movie we headed over to the local book store.  The girls all bought the soundtrack to this movie…obviously they were feeling the same way as me!  I don’t understand why the critics haven’t ranked this movie better…but go and judge for yourself.
